It is funny how things work, we had just brought home this most precious baby girl from the hospital 11 weeks ago. She was the most perfect thing (along with the older two!) Life couldn't have been any better. I remember saying many times how happy I (we) were! Life was good! Then just like that the rug got ripped out from under us.
For the last couple weeks I have noticed that Little E has needed to use the bathroom a lot and that he has been super thirsty. We went on a couple road trips and we would have to stop every hour so he could go, which was very unlike him. It flashed through my head several times that he could be diabetic, but then I would quickly snap out of it knowing he was too young for something like and that I was just being paranoid (something I have known to be from time to time.)
Finally I decided I better check things out so I woke up early Monday morning so I could make an appointment as soon as the clinic office opened up. To my surprise I got him in that very same day (that never happens to me)! When the Dr. asked why I brought him in, I described his symptoms. She then said we needed to do some tests on him to out rule a bladder infection or him being diabetic. Within minutes she came back into the room and I knew instantly by the look on her face it wasn't a bladder infection. She said it was positive that he was Type 1 Diabetic. His blood sugar levels were above 700 (normal is around 70-140.)

That is the moment that changed everything. She said I need to call my husband and get to the hospital where he would need to be admi tted. Little E ended up spending a total of four, super long days and nights at the hospital. Day one, two, and three were the worst. It would take at least three of us holding him down each time he needed an injection or a finger prick. By day four he was starting to accept things a little better.
Jas and I both know many people who are diabetic but we NEVER dreamed it could happen to our baby. We have been flooded with tons of emotions from; Why him? Why not me? This isn't fair! How are we going to do this? This has to be a bad dream! and on and on . . . well it turns out it wasn't a dream. We have had to do a lot of soul searching during this whole ordeal. We know there are millions of people who are diagnosed with this disease and they are doing OK (some better then others). We also know that there are millions of people who have it a lot worse. This is something we can live with.. . there is no other choice. We are going to make the best of it. I am sure some days will be better then others! Our Dr. made it clear that he is still a kid and needs to do all
the things kids do, however we will need to monitor what he eats so we can adjust the insulin accordingly. I think that has been the hardest thing to deal with. I have never once really thought about something before I ate it. If I was hungry for it, I ate it. We have tried to eat healthy, but we have known to splurge from time to time. Now every time he eats anything we need to really THINK about what it is going to do to his blood sugar and how much insulin he is going to need to compensate for it.
This blog will go on and so will our life! :-) As Nana and Papa put it when they walked in the door on Friday and Little E greeted them with the biggest naughty bear growl they had ever heard, it was his way of saying he was OK and he would be just fine! He will be fine and so will we! We are one week into his diagnosis and we have come a long ways. I know it will only get easier (as easy as giving your three year old child 5 shots and finger pricks a day can be!) :-)
Thanks again to everyone for all your love, support, and well wishes! You have been what has helped us make it through this last week! Love to you all!

I have been thinking about you and your family so much Mistie! Hoping this adjusting period is going okay. Let me know if there is anything I can do!
